We are delighted to announce the appointment of our inaugural First Nations Assistant Director of Nursing - Workforce Design, Hylda Poipoi (Wapau).
Hylda is an Aith Koedal woman who was raised in St Pauls on Moa Island and Thursday Island, with strong ties to Saibai Island. She has worked at Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) for six years as a Nurse Navigator, with extensive history of working in Indigenous Health, Community Control Health Sector, Primary Health Care and Health Education.
In addition to her Bachelor of Nursing Science, Graduate Diploma in Indigenous Health Promotion and Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Hylda recently won the inaugural Spirit of JCU Award 2023.
In her new role, Hylda will provide professional leadership within nursing and midwifery to develop pathways into TCHHS for First Nations people. She will create a strategic position that facilitates and integrates Indigenous health perspectives, creating space for open and respectful conversations internally and externally to support potential future directions.
As a Health Service, we are passionate about increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and providing stronger links and engagement with individual communities.
